Zambia Specific Information

  • Available formulation in Zambia: Pyrantel Oral liquid: 50 mg/ml (as embonate). Tablet (chewable): 250 mg (as embonate).
  • Active against many nematodes
  • Ascariasis, enterobiasis, trichostrongyliasis: 11 mg/kg base PO x1 (max 1 g/day)
  • Infection by Moniliformis: 11 mg/kg base PO x1; repeat twice, at 2-wk intervals
  • Infection by Uncinaria: 11 mg/kg base daily x3 d (max 1 g/day)

  • GI intolerance

DRUG INTERACTIONS

  • Piperazine: antagonism with co-administration. Avoid co-administration.
  • Theophylline: theophylline serum concentrations may be decreased. Monitor theophylline serum concentrations closely with co-administration.

SPECTRUM

Hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus), pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), roundworm (Ascariasis lumbricoides), Ancylostoma caninum

PHARMACOLOGY

Pharmacology

COMMENTS

Well-tolerated agent active against many nematodes. Should not be used together with piperazine due to antagonism.
